Our Story

Sourdough Starter

How it all began

At The Sourdough Treasury, we believe in the art of sourdough baking. Founded by Treasure Phillips, our bakery brings you handcrafted loaves made with care and the finest regional ingredients.

There is an old tradition in sourdough that says once you make your first successful loaf of bread, you should name your starter, for good luck. I would like to share the story of the sourdough starter used in The Sourdough Treasury.

I grew up on a farm in NH. One of my fondest memories was coming home from school with my brothers to a house filled with the aromatic smell of freshly baked sourdough bread! We couldn’t wait to slather the bread with butter , and most times we did not even wait until it was cool before grabbing a loaf and tearing into it!

Donna, my mother, suffered from Dementia for the last 13 years of her life and was in a nursing facility. I never thought of it growing up, or until long after mom was gone, but I really wanted to learn that skill from her.

As an adult I tried for YEARS to recreate that childhood in my own home, with countless failures along the way. All those failures were learning experiences and were what helped me get to where I am at today. Reminding me every day, that there can be joy in the journey.

Every failed loaf I thought of mom and how good her bread was. Every flat loaf, every over proofed loaf, every gooey, clumpy, burnt, under or overcooked loaf and all the loaves in between...I thought of my mom. Healing my heart in ways I did not know it needed to be healed. Brining me to a closure I desperately needed for her passing.

I am honored for you to be part of my journey and am so grateful that I can share MOM with you.
